Doxorubicin Impurity 14, also known as N-desmethyl doxorubicin or doxorubicinol, is a metabolite of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin. It is an anthracycline antibiotic that has been used to treat a variety of cancers, including leukemia, breast cancer, and lung cancer. Doxorubicin Impurity 14 is primarily used as a reference standard in the development and validation of analytical methods for the quantification of doxorubicinol in biological matrices. The chemical structure of Doxorubicin Impurity 14 is similar to that of doxorubicin, with the exception of a missing methoxy group on the C-4 position of the anthracycline ring. This structural difference affects the drug's pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, as well as its toxicity profile. Doxorubicin Impurity 14 is less toxic than doxorubicin itself, but it still retains some of the drug's therapeutic effects. Studies have shown that Doxorubicin Impurity 14 is rapidly metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine. It has a half-life of approximately 20 hours and is eliminated from the body within 5 days of administration. It is important to note that Doxorubicin Impurity 14 should not be used as a therapeutic agent, as its safety and efficacy have not been established in clinical trials.
