Beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid that is produced naturally in the body. It is used primarily in the synthesis of carnosine, a dipeptide that is found in high concentration in skeletal muscle. Carnosine acts as a buffer, helping to regulate the pH of muscle tissue during exercise. By increasing the concentration of carnosine in muscle tissue, beta-alanine supplementation may help to delay the onset of muscle fatigue and improve athletic performance. Beta-alanine has also been shown to have a number of other potential health benefits. It may help to reduce muscle soreness and inflammation, improve cognitive function, and boost immune system function. Additionally, beta-alanine may have anti-aging properties, as it has been shown to increase the lifespan of cells in laboratory studies. Chemically, beta-alanine is a non-polar, aliphatic amino acid. It is classified as a non-proteinogenic amino acid, as it is not used in the synthesis of proteins. Beta-alanine is structurally similar to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that plays a role in the regulation of muscle tone and relaxation. Beta-alanine is also a precursor to pantothenic acid, a B-vitamin that is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Beta-alanine is available as a dietary supplement in both powder and capsule form.
