Drospirenone 5,5-Diol is a synthetic progestin used in hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies. It is a derivative of spironolactone, a diuretic and aldosterone antagonist, and has a similar structure to progesterone. Drospirenone 5,5-Diol functions as an anti-androgen and has minimal estrogenic or androgenic activity.
Drospirenone 5,5-Diol is commonly used in combination with ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen, in oral contraceptive pills. The combination of these hormones prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus.
