Inorganic salts dissociate in solutions into ions (or electrolytes).
These ions are essential in different metabolic activities of the cell. NaCl, for instance, dissociates into sodium and chloride ions. Sodium ions, in particular, are essential during the depolarization of neurons and muscle cells, and therefore essential for the relay of impulses and muscle contraction.
